On February 13th 1571, the Florentine goldsmith, sculptor and writer Benvenuto Cellini died in his native city. Cellini (1500-71) spent the first decade of his adult life in Rome, where the Palazzo del Banco di Santo Spirito, formerly the Palazzo della Zecca Vecchia, sports a beautiful bronze plaque in his honour. The plaque, which was erected in 1907 by the goldsmiths (orafi) of Rome, states that Cellini worked in the palazzo when it housed the papal mint (Zecca Papale). Comments are closed.
