Monument to Pope John XXIII (1964-67) by Emilio Greco (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, Sotto il Monte near Bergamo, b.1881/r.1958-63)
His monument is the work of the Sicilian sculptor Emilio Greco (1913-95).
John XXIII, one of the most popular popes, was known affectionately as 'Papa Buono'. One of the scenes depicted is the pope's visit to a local prison, where he told the prisoners that as they couldn't come to see him, he had come to see them.
Pope John XXIII was canonised on April 27th 2014. His body lies under the Altar of St Jerome.
