Monument toPope Clement XIII (1783-92) by Antonio Canova (Carlo Rezzonico, Venice, b.1693/r.1758-69) The monument to Pope Clement XIII was created by the Neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822).
The Pope kneels in prayer, with his tiara placed in front of him. To the left stands Religion, while to the right the winged Genius inverts his torch, thus extinguishing the flame of life. At the base of the monument lie two lions, one asleep, the other awake.
The inscription reads: CLEMENTI XIII / REZZONICO / P. M. / FRATRES FILII.
