Sant' Alessio all' Aventino is a heavily remodelled 13th century monastic and titular church.
The church is, in fact, jointly dedicated to St Boniface and St Alexis; its official title is Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio all' Aventino.
Nave
There is beautiful mediaeval Cosmatesque work in strip-panels on the nave floor.
The high altar is covered by a richly decorated baldacchino with a hemispherical dome.
Chapel of St Alexis
The chapel at the near end of the left aisle is dedicated to St Alexis and contains what is traditionally claimed to be the wooden staircase under which he died. Below this is a statue of the dying saint, which shows him wearing the garb of a pilgrim and clasping the letter that revealed his identity after death. The statue is by Andrea Bergondi and and was made in the late-18th century.
