In the world of classical music the small Tuscan city of Lucca has punched well above its weight, being the birthplace of three major composers: Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762), Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) and Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924).
Lucca has honoured each of its musical sons with statues. However, while Geminiani and Boccherini are clearly portrayed as musicians, the statue of the man who gave the world such operas as Madame Butterfly, Tosca and La Bohème makes no reference, whatsoever, to his profession.
The statue of Puccini is the work of the sculptor Vito Tongiani.
