The 16th century Fontana diPiazza Nicosia, one of the oldest fountains in Rome, was originally sited in Piazza del Popolo.
The fountain was commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII (r. 1572-85) for the Piazza del Popolo and designed by Giambattista della Porta. It originally stood in the centre of the square, but was later moved to the perimeter, near the start of the Via del Corso. There it stood until 1818 when it was moved to the Janiculum, in front of the church of San Pietro in Montorio.

However, after a couple of decades it was dismantled and put into storage, reappearing in 1950 in its present position.
