The Fontana di Piazza delle Cinque Scole was commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII (r. 1572-85) and designed by Giacomo della Porta (1532-1602). The fountain is named after the five synagogues that once existed in this area.
The fountain, which is also known as the Fontana del Pianto, was carved by Pietro Gucci. It originally stood a short distance away, in Piazza Giudea, once the site of the main entrance to the Jewish Ghetto.
