In EUR, in the centre of Piazza Guglielmo Marconi (originally Piazza Imperiale), stands an obelisk that is dedicated to the celebrated Italian inventor and Nobel prize winner, Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi, 1st Marquis of Marconi (1874-1937).
Marconi, who is credited as the inventor of radio, died in Rome on July 20th 1937. The obelisk was commissioned two years later. However, it was not completed until 1959 and inaugurated on December 12th of that year.
The core of the obelisk, which is 45 m (147 ft) tall, is concrete, while the 92 reliefs, the work of Arturo Dazzi (1881-1966), are made of Cararra marble.
