In EUR, in the centre of Piazza Guglielmo Marconi (originally Piazza Imperiale), stands an obelisk, which is dedicated to the celebrated Italian inventor and Nobel prize winner, Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi, 1st Marquis of Marconi (1874-1937).
Marconi, who is credited as the inventor of radio, died in Rome on July 20th, 1937, and the obelisk was commissioned two years later. However, it was not completed until 1959 and inaugurated on December 12th of that year.
The 'Marconi' obelisk is 45 metres high and the 92 marble reliefs, the work of Arturo Dazzi (1881-1966), celebrate the invention of the radio.
