The Fontana del Mascherone (Fountain of the Mask) in Via Giulia, which stands in the shadow of the Palazzo Farnese, is crowned with a large stone fleur-di-lis, which presumably indicates that the fountain was commissioned by the Farnese family (six fleur-di-lis make up the Farnese coat of arms). The fountain appears to date from the 17th century.
The Fountain of the Mask, Piazza Santa Sabina
There is a second Fontana del Mascherone in the piazza outside the church of Santa Sabina. The fountain unites a 16th century mascaron, which once belonged to another fountain, and an antique granite bathtub. The ensemble was created in 1936.
