The Galleria dei Candelabri takes its name from the marble candelabras which divide the space into six sections. The gallery was originally designed during the reign of Pope Pius VI (r. 1775-99), but was completely restructured at the behest of Pope Leo XIII (r. 1878-1903), whose coat of arms takes pride of place in the centre of the pavement.
