Santa Francesca Romana
The mosaic in the apse of the church of Santa Francesca Romana was probably completed in 1161.
In the centre of the mosaic sits the Madonna and Child. To the left stand St John and St James and to the right St Peter and St Andrew. All of the figures are placed under an arcade of rounded arches, the pillars of which separate them as they do in ancient Roman sarcophagi.  ​
