Marymass, or the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is celebrated on September 8th, once a national holiday in Italy.
Mary's birth is depicted in a beautiful medieval mosaic, the work of the Roman painter Pietro Cavallini (died c. 1330), in the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. The scene was frequently depicted in art, as part of cycles of the Life of the Virgin.
