The beautiful fresco of the 'Marriage of Alexander the Great and Roxana' (c. 1517), in the Sala delle Nozze di Alessandro e Rossana (Villa Farnesina), is the work of Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (1477-1549), better known as il Sodoma. The room was originally the bedchamber of Agostino Chigi (1466-1520), the wealthy banker from Siena, who commissioned the architect and painter Baldassare Peruzzi (1481-1536), a fellow Senese, to build the villa (1508-1511). Bazzi also painted the fresco of the 'Women of the Family of Darius before Alexander'. Comments are closed.
