August 6th is the Feast of the Transfiguration, which commemorates the revelation by Jesus of his divinity to St Peter, St James the Greater and St John the Apostle on Mount Tabor, outside Jerusalem. The Old Testament patriarchs Moses and Elijah also appeared, as a brilliant white light radiated from Christ. Perhaps the most famous depiction of the event is by Raphael (1483-1520), in a large painting in the Pinacoteca, which is part of the Vatican Museums. Comments are closed.
