It is the most famous equestrian statue in the world and the man astride the horse was born in Rome on April 26th 121 CE. Marcus Aurelius, the fifth of the so-called 'Five Good Emperors', reigned as co-emperor with Lucius Verus from March 7th, 161 until the latter's death in early 169, and alone until his own death on March 17th, 180, aged fifty-eight.
