The Fountain of the Tritons (Fontana dei Tritoni), which stands opposite the church of Santa Maria di Cosmedin, was commissioned by Pope Clement XI (r. 1700-21) and designed by the architect Carlo Francesco Bizzaccheri (1656-1721). The tritons were carved by the sculptor Francesco Moratti (1669 - c. 1719), who was also known as il Padovano, as he hailed from the north-eastern city of Padova (Padua).
