The Fountain of the Tritons
The Fountain of the Tritons (Fontana dei Tritoni), which stands opposite the church of Santa Maria di Cosmedin, was commissioned by Pope Clement XI (r. 1700-21) and designed by the architect Carlo Francesco Bizzaccheri (1656-1721). The tritons were carved by the sculptor Francesco Moratti (1669 - c. 1719), who was also known as il Padovano, as he hailed from the north-eastern city of Padova (Padua).   ​
