Of ancient foundation, Santi Celso e Giuliano is an 18th century minor basilica. It was designed by the Roman architect Carlo De Dominicis (1696-1758), at the behest of Pope Clement XII (r. 1730-40).
Facade Window
The inscription on the facade reads: IN HONOREM SANCTORVM MM CELSI ET IVLIANI CLEMENS XII PONT M AN V.
Entrance
The ornate entrance is crowned with the Chi-Rho symbol, which can also be seen in the capitals of the columns.
Interior
The layout of the interior is elliptical, the long axis being transverse. There are six side chapels, three on each side. A plaque in the first chapel on the left notes that Pope Pius XII (r. 1939-58) was baptised in the basilica.
Dome
The saucer dome is also elliptical and rests directly on the entablature.
High Altar
The sanctuary apse has its own vault. The high altar was designed by Pompeo Batoni in 1738. The altarpiece depicts Christ being adored by saints, including St Celsus and St Julian.
