Santa Maria in Trivio is a 16th century convent church of ancient foundation.
The little convent is one of the oldest in Rome. It was founded circa 537 by the Byzantine general Belisarius.
Belisarius Inscription
There is an early-12th-century inscription recording the foundation of the church on the side wall of the church.
In translation it reads: Belisarius, a friend of the City, because of his faults founded this church. Therefore he who puts a foot in the sacred temple, pray often to God to have mercy on him. This is the door of the temple, defended by God the almighty.
High Altar
The interior comprises a nave with three shallow chapels to either side.
The high altar has a small panel painting of the Virgin and Child (c. 1400) at the centre of a large gilded glory.
The Triumph of the Cross
The sanctuary arch is surmounted by The Triumph of the Cross (1677) by Antonio Gherardi.
Vault of the Nave
The barrel-vaulted ceiling was painted by Antonio Gherardi in 1670. There are three central scenes: The Presentation of the Child Mary at the Temple, The Assumption and The Circumcision of Jesus.
