Santa Maria in Aquiro is a late 16th century church of ancient foundation. The date of its foundation as well as the meaning of the appellation Aquiro have been lost in time.
A Cardinal's Coat of Arms
The facade is crowned with a cardinal's coat of arms. Two winged putti hold up a shield, which is emblazoned with a double-headed eagle over a lion rampant.
Nave
The interior is made up of a vestibule; a nave and two aisles. There are three chapels off each aisle. The transept has a dome over the crossing and a chapel at each end. The small sanctuary has an apse.
Funerary Monument to Archbishop Carlo di Montecatini
Santa Maria in Aquiro boasts a rather fine funerary monument to Archbishop Carlo di Montecatini (1699), the work of Domenico Guidi (1625-1701).
Balustrade, Chapel of the Guardian Angel
The balustrade of the Chapel of the Guardian Angel (first left) is beautifully carved.
