The church of Sant' Anselmo all' Aventino, which was designed by the Roman architect Francesco Vespignani (1842-99), was consecrated on November 11th 1900.
Nave
The interior of the church consists of a central nave and two side aisles divided by 10 grey granite columns with Ionic capitals, plus two columns with Corinthian capitals supporting the triumphal arch
Apse Mosaics
The vault of the apse iss decorated with mosaics. In the centre two angels support a jewelled cross, which depicts Christ as a young man, with a clean-shaven face and short hair, as he appears in the oldest representations. Above the jewelled cross, the hand of God is seen holding a crown. To the left and right of the cross are St Benedict and St Anselm.
In the side aisles are two altars, one dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the other to the Blessed Sacrament.
The church's flooring is in the Cosmatesque style.
St Anselm by Albert Wider
In 1966, a bronze statue of Saint Anselm, the work of the Swiss sculptor Albert Wider (1910-85), was placed in the courtyard in front of the church.
Angel of Peace
On the exterior of the church, above the apse, is a large tondo of an angel holding a banner, which is inscribed with the word PAX.
