The 17th century church of San Nicola da Tolentino agli Orti di Sallustiano (St Nicholas of Tolentino at the Gardens of Sallust) is dedicated to St Nicholas of Tolentino, a 13th century Augustinian friar.
St Nicholas of Tolentino (c. 1246-1305) is known as the patron of Holy Souls and is particularly invoked as an advocate for the souls in Purgatory. He was canonised by Pope Eugenius IV (r. 1431-47) on June 6th 1446. His feast day is September 10th.
The high altar is by Alessandro Algardi.
Statuary Group
The altarpiece is by two sculptors; the Virgin and Child, St Augustine and St Monica are by Ercole Ferrata, while St Nicholas is by Domenico Guidi. The bas-relief panel in the pediment depicts The Eternal Father by Ferrata.
