San Lorenzo in Miranda (Temple of Antoninus Pius and Faustina)
San Lorenzo in Miranda is a 17th century guild church.
San Lorenzo in Miranda occupies the building that was once the Temple of Antoninus Pius and Faustina. The temple might have been converted to a church as early as the 7th or 8th century. In 1429, Pope Martin V (r. 1417-31) gave the church to the Collegio degli Speziali (College of Chemists and Herbalists), at the time officially known as the Universitas Aromatorium. The present-day Nobile Collegio Chimico Farmaceutico is the direct descendent of this guild and retains St Lawrence as its patron.
Interior
Between 1601 and 1602 the church was rebuilt by Orazio Torriani (1578-1657).
The interior comprises a single nave with three chapels on either side. The altarpiece in the high altar is by Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669) and depicts The Martyrdom of St Lawrence.
San Lorenzo in Miranda (Pre-1876)
The entrance stairway was excavated in 1876, which entailed a substantial lowering of the ground level. As a result the doorway became stranded. The entrance is now to the right side of the church.
