The fountain which forms the centrepiece of Piazza Mazzini was designed in the 1920s by the architect Raffaele del Vico (1881-1969); the sculptures are the work of Ermenegildo Luppi (1877-1937).
Each of the fountain's four columns is crowned with an imperial eagle; at the base is a bas-relief of the fasces (the axes were later obliterated) and the words: VIRTVS HONOR IMPERIVM.
