Trajan's Column: Statue of St Peter
Trajan's Column was once crowned with a bronze statue of the eponymous emperor in military dress, thought to have been in the region of 5 metres high.
The statue of Trajan disappeared centuries ago, but in 1587, at the behest of Pope Sixtus V (r. 1585-90), a statue of St Peter, the work of Tommaso della Porta and Leonardo Sormani, was erected in its place.
