On July 25th 1943, Benito Mussolini was voted out of power by the Fascist Grand Council. Il Duce, as he liked to style himself, was dismissed by King Vittorio Emanuele III (r. 1900-46) and subsequently arrested. More than eighty years later, a monumental marble obelisk, which bears the words MVSSOLINI DVX, still stands outside a sports complex in the north of Rome. Mussolini’s obelisk is now officially known as the Obelisco del Foro Italico. Comments are closed.
