On September 23rd 1905, the architect Giuseppe Sacconi died. Sacconi (1854-1905) is best known for his design of the Monument to King Victor Emmanuele II, which stands in the centre of Rome. Sadly, the architect didn't live to see its inauguration, which took place on June 4th 1911. The grand monument, better known as Il Vittoriano, is one of the most photographed sights in Rome and yet I don't imagine many can name the man who designed it! Comments are closed.
