September 21st is the feast day of St Matthew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. He is also held to be one of the four Evangelists, as the author of the Gospel of Matthew, a claim disputed by most biblical scholars. St Matthew is the subject of three beautiful paintings by Caravaggio, in the Cappella Contarelli, in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi. St Matthew is the patron saint of accountants, bankers and tax collectors. Comments are closed.
