On May 24th 15 BCE, the general who would be known as Germanicus was born in Rome. Had it not been for his premature death, on October 10th 16 CE, Germanicus would have become emperor. In addition to being the nephew and adopted son of Rome's second emperor Tiberius (r. 14-37), he was the father of the third, Caligula (r. 37-41), and the brother of the fourth, Claudius (r. 41-54). In August 1963, the remains of a bronze statue of Germanicus were unearthed outside the main gate of the small Umbrian hill town of Amelia. The pieces were restored and reassembled and the statue is on display in the town's museum. Comments are closed.
