On July 22nd 1676, Pope Clement X died in Rome. He was eighty-six years old. Cardinal Emilio Altieri was just a couple of months short of his eightieth birthday at the time of his election on April 29th 1670, which makes him the oldest ever person to become pope. We have Clement X to thank for commissioning the ten angels on the Ponte Sant' Angelo, which were designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini, and executed by members of his workshop. Comments are closed.
