On May 13th 1572, Cardinal Ugo Boncompagni was elected pope, taking the name Gregory XIII. The coat of arms of Pope Gregory XIII (r. 1572-85) is displayed on the beautifully decorated wooden ceiling of the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. Pope Gregory XIII is, perhaps, most famous for his reform of the calendar. The new calendar, which came into existence in October 1582, is known as the Gregorian Calendar.
