The church of the Most Holy Name of Mary at the Forum of Trajan (Santissimo Nome di Maria al Foro Traiano) was built by the French architect Antoine Derizet (1697-1768) between 1736 and 1741.
The Feast of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 12th) was instituted by Pope Innocent XI (r. 1676-89) after the victory of the Austrian-Polish armies, under the command of John III Sobieski, over the Turks at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. In building Santissimo Nome di Maria al Foro Traiano, Derizet decided to match the style of the neighbouring church of Santa Maria di Loreto, which had been built 200 years earlier.
