The initial design of the small church of Sant' Eligio degli Orefici has been attributed to Raphael (1483-1520). It was not completed until long after Raphael's death by Baldassare Peruzzi (1481-1536) and others. The church was commissioned by the Guild of Goldsmiths (Università e Nobil Collegio degli Orefici) and dedicated to their patron saint, St Eligius, whose feast day is celebrated on December 1st.
