August 15th is the Feast Day of the Assumption of the Virgin, which commemorates the belief that the body of the Virgin Mary was taken up (assumed) into heaven at the end of her earthly life.
There is a very fine bas-relief of the Assumption by the sculptor Pietro Bernini (1562-1629), father of the much more illustrious Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), in the baptistery of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Comments are closed.
