July 25th is the feast day of St James the Greater, the patron saint of pilgrims. St James the Apostle, the brother of St John, was one of the circle of men closest to Jesus, being present with Peter and John at the Transfiguration, and again at the Agony in the Garden. In art, St James is often depicted sporting a staff and wearing the pilgrim's broad-brimmed hat and cloak. His special attribute, a scallop shell, appears on either the hat or cloak.
