February 14th is the feast day of St Valentine of Terni, the patron saint of lovers & (what is much less well known) beekeepers. The church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin is home to, what it claims to be, the skull of the third century saint. Valentine's Day as a lovers' festival dates back to as early as the 14th century.
