The ancient basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura (St Lawrence Outside the Walls) was the only church in Rome to suffer in the second world war; it was badly damaged during a bombing raid on the city's railway yards on July 19th, 1943.
The church was subsequently repaired; the work being completed in 1949.
