The ancient basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura (St Lawrence Outside the Walls) was the only church in Rome to suffer in the second world war. It was badly damaged during a bombing raid on the city's railway yards on July 19th, 1943.
The church was subsequently repaired; the work being completed in 1949.
