On November 10th 1549, Pope Paul III died. Born Alessandro Farnese, on February 29th 1468, he was elected pope on October 13th 1534.
Pope Paul III was a significant patron of artists, including Michelangelo and Titian. As soon as he became pope he commissioned Michelangelo to paint The Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. And a few years before his death, he sat for Titian, who painted one of his greatest portraits.
Paul III is interred in St Peter's Basilica.
