On November 23rd 1682, the French painter Claude Gellée, better known as Claude Lorrain, died in Rome, where he had worked for much of his life. He is buried in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi. The monument to Claude, who was famous for his studies of the Roman campagna, is the work of the French sculptor Paul Le Moyne (1784-1873), who also died in Rome. Comments are closed.
