On February 18th 1564, less than three weeks short of his 89th birthday, Michelangelo died in Rome. Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, to give the great man his full name, lived in Via Macel de Corvi, close to the church of Santa Maria in Loreto. His body was moved to the nearby church of Santi XII Apostoli before being taken to Florence for burial. There is a monument to Michelangelo, the work of Giacomo del Duca, in one of the two cloisters of Santi Apostoli. The inscription reads: MICHAEL ANGELVS BONARROTIVS SCVLPTOR PICTOR ARCHITECTVS MAXIMA ARTIFICVM FREQVENTIA IN HAC BASILICA SS XII APOST F M C XI KAL MART A MDLXIV ELATVS EST CLAM INDE FLORENTIAM TRANSLATVS ET IN TEMPLO S CRVCIS EORVMD F V ID MART EIVSD A CONDITVS TANTO NOMINI NVLLVM PAR ELOGIVM It concludes with the words: TANTO NOMINI NULLIUM PAR ELOGIUM (No praise is equal to such a great name).
