May 26th is the feast day of St Philip Neri (1515-95), the Florentine founder of the Confoederatio Oratorii Sancti Philippi Nerii (Confederation of Oratories of Saint Philip Neri), commonly known as the Oratorians. St Philip Neri is interred in the Chiesa Nuova. There is a beautiful statue of the saint, the work of Alessandro Algardi (1598-1654), in the sacristy of the church. Known as the 'second apostle of Rome', Filippo Romola Neri was canonised by Pope Gregory XV (r. 1621-23) on March 12th 1622. Comments are closed.
