May 26th is the feast day of St Philip Neri (1515-95), the Florentine founder of the Oratorians. St Philip Neri is interred in the Chiesa Nuova. There is a beautiful statue of the saint, the work of Alessandro Algardi (1598-1654), in the sacristy of the church. Known as the 'second apostle of Rome', Filippo Romola Neri was canonised by Pope Gregory XV (r. 1621-23) on March 12th 1622. Comments are closed.
