Ever since its inauguration, on May 22nd 1762, the monumental Fontana di Trevi has been acclaimed as one of the iconic sights of Rome. The fountain was begun during the reign of Pope Clement XII (r. 1730-40), whose coat of arms crowns the structure, and completed during that of Pope Clement XIII (r. 1758-69). The Trevi Fountain was designed by the Roman architect Nicola Salvi. Sadly, Salvi never saw the work completed, as he died in 1751. Comments are closed.
