On May 11th 330, Constantinople became the new capital of the Roman Empire. The city was named after the emperor Constantine the Great (r. 306-337). Over 1100 years later, on May 29th 1453, Constantinople was captured by the Ottoman army of Sultan Mehmed II, and renamed Istanbul. Comments are closed.
