On March 17th 1861, the Kingdom of Italy was born. At the time, Rome was not even part of the country let alone its capital! The capital was Turin and the king was Vittorio Emanuele II (r. 1861-78). It would be a decade before Rome became the capital of Italy, after the honour was briefly held by Florence (1865-70). Comments are closed.
