On March 14th 1800, Cardinal Barnaba Chiaramonti was elected pope, taking the name Pius VII, in honour of his predecessor.
The conclave was held in Venice; it was the last time a papal election was held outside Rome. Pope Pius VII died on August 23rd 1823. His funerary monument is the only work in St Peter's Basilica by a non-Catholic sculptor, namely Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). Comments are closed.
