On June 10th 1654, the great Baroque sculptor Alessandro Algardi died in Rome. He was buried in the church of Santi Giovanni e Petronio dei Bolognesi. Unfortunately, his tomb was later destroyed. Algardi was born in Bologna, but spent most of his working life in the Eternal City. Two of his major works are in St Peter's Basilica: the funerary monument to Pope Leo XI and the monumental bas-relief of the Fuga d'Attila (Flight of Attila). Comments are closed.
