On January 30th 1788, Charles Edward Stuart, better known as 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', died in the Palazzo Balestra*, where he had been born on December 31st 1720. Grandson of King James II of England, he was the Stuart claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland, following the death of his father James Francis Edward Stuart in 1766. *The palazzo, which stands in the shadow of the church of Santi Apostoli, was once known as the Palazzo Muti Papazzuri. In 1719 Pope Clement XI (r. 1700-21) granted the use of the palazzo to James Francis Edward Stuart, whom he regarded as the rightful king of England, Scotland and Ireland. Comments are closed.
