On January 27th 1866, the Welsh neoclassical sculptor John Gibson (b. 1790) died in Rome, where he had lived and worked for almost fifty years. For almost five decades, his studio in Via della Fontanella acted as a point of reference for his fellow artists as well as for visitors on the Grand Tour. 'Gibson of Rome', as he was known, is buried in the 'Protestant' Cemetery. Comments are closed.
