The funerary monument to Pope Pius VI (r. 1775-79), the work of Antonio Canova (1757-1822) and his pupil Adamo Tadolini (1788-1868), was designed to stand in the Confessio in St Peter's Basilica. The monument was later moved to the basilica's crypt, a space better known as the Vatican Grottoes, the burial place of more than ninety popes. Comments are closed.
