On February 20th 1878, Cardinal Gioacchino Pecci was elected pope, taking the name Leo XIII. Leo XIII (r. 1878-1903) is one of only three popes to have reigned for 25 years or more; the other two are Pius IX (r. 1846-1878) and John Paul II (r. 1978-2005). At his death, on July 20th 1903, Leo XIII became the oldest pope (whose age can be validated) in history. Comments are closed.
