In the shadow of Palazzo del Quirinale stands the equestrian statue of King Carlo Alberto of Savoy, King of Sardinia (1798-1849).
On March 17th 1861, his son and successor Vittorio Emanuele II became the first monarch of the newly created Kingdom of Italy.
The monument (1900) is the work of the Florentine sculptor Raffaele Romanelli (1856-1928).
